European Commission President Ursula von der Laien has implied on Thursday that the European Union may need to limit its level of openness to Chinese imports, as long as there is no more reciprocity from Beijing. As he noted, Chinese leaders have begun to examine the issue and expressed their willingness to support domestic consumption.
“Unlike other major markets, Europe keeps its market open to Chinese products. This reflects our long commitment to a rules -based commercial policy. However, this openness does not find an impact on the part of China, “von der Laien told reporters after meeting with Chinese leaders in Beijing.
He added that overproduction, subsidized production that does not meet domestic demand and the restrictions imposed on other markets on Chinese imports – with the result of the burden of the EU’s single market – are also problems that need to be addressed.
“We need to see progress on this issue, because without progress it will be very difficult for the European Union to maintain the current level of openness,” he warned.
“China’s attitude towards Putin’s war will determine relations with the EU”
The European Union expects China to respond to its concerns and exploit its influence to pressure Russia to accept a ceasefire in Ukraine, the European Commission chairman also said.
Speaking to Beijing after her meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the one -day summit in Beijing, she added that it was important to have a ceasefire and to take negotiations to end bloodshed.
“How China will continue to interact with Putin’s war will be a decisive factor in our future relations,” he said.
EU priority a negotiating solution with the US for trade
At the same time, the President of the Commission said that the EU’s key priority in talks with the United States is to achieve a negotiating solution to trade and duties.
As he said, intensive political consultations with Washington are underway and stressed that “all media remain on the table until we have a satisfactory result.”
At the same time, he noted that the EU’s relationship with China is based on its own advantages and is independent of actions or issues concerning others.
