European Commission President Ursula von der Layen is scheduled to meet today in Scotland, US President Donald Trump, with the aim of making progress towards reaching EU-UPA agreement.
The meeting is expected to take place in the afternoon (at 18.30 in Greece), as Ursula von der Laien and Donald Trump are already in Scotland. The US president, during his arrival in Scotland, estimated that the chances of a trade agreement with the EU were “50-50”, or possibly less. For its part, the European Commission, negotiating on behalf of 27 EU countries, hopes to find a solution with the US before August 1 – the deadline after which Donald Trump threatens to impose a 30% duty on all imports from Europe.
On Thursday, a spokesman for the European Commission said that reaching an agreement was “feasible”. According to European sources, the agreement currently being discussed is providing for 15% customs duties in European exports to the US, with exceptions in certain sectors (alcoholic, certain medicines, aeronautics). Steel and aluminum will be subject to specific rules.
The EU is currently subject to three types of customs duties by the US: 50% in steel and aluminum, 25% in cars and 10% in most EU -exported goods, a general duty that Washington threatens to increase to 30% on August 1.
If the meeting between Ursula von der Laien and Donald Trump does not reach an agreement, the European Commission already has a list of possible retaliation approved by EU countries.
US goods are expected to be taxed in total with 93 billion euros, starting on August 7 and at various stages. The EU is also considering taxation of US services, including the technology sector. In addition, if necessary, the EU is ready to launch its “bazooka”, the so -called “against coercion” means, which allows, inter alia, freezing companies access to European public procurement markets or blocking certain investments.
