Success in the 2000s with the hit “All the Things She Said”, the Russian Tatu duo, formed by singers Julia Volkova and Lena Katina, revealed that she is returning to the stage. On social networks, a show was announced on July 19 and other news to come.
Although the posts of the singers are written in Russian, several Brazilian fans have commented on social networks asking for shows in Brazil. In 2013, for example, fans organized a kitty to bring Lena’s show to Sao Paulo.
The nostalgia caused by the duo’s return was also reflected in other corners of the internet. The interest in the pair has grown again in Brazil, reaching the peak search this month, according to Google Trends data.
Tatu’s story began in 1999, when music producer Ivan Shapovalov and his partner created the project to launch a duo of Russian teenagers as protagonists.
At the time, the two, still teenagers, followed a style of wise pop, with lyrics like “they say it’s my fault, but I love her so much,” which led many to believe that they were really romantically involved. However, the pair denied this idea later.
In 2003, the pair was invited to perform at the Tonight Show with Jay Leno at NBC, but on the condition that they don’t kiss or comment on the Iraqi War.
To protest, they performed wearing white t-shirts with the inscription “The War” and, during the performance of “All the Things She Said”, kissed behind their hands as the cameras cut the scene for about 20 seconds.
In an interview with Daily Beast in August 2013, Katina said, “I stared at it like my role … as a movie. We played a role in a movie. That was my role. I was never a lesbian. I never felt attracted to a girl. I never felt it.”
The song “All the Things She Said” was the duo’s only big commercial hit, debuting on Billboard’s charts, and is part of the 2002 2002 2002 album. It is also the most heard of Duo on Spotify, with 674 million reproductions.
After subsequent singles do not achieve the same success, the duo announced their definitive separation in 2011.
After the end of the pair, they followed a solo career and released some songs, but none took off.
In 2014, Volkova generated controversy with a statement about the acceptance of homosexuality. She said, “I would not accept if my son were gay, because I believe a man needs to be a real man. God created man to procreate, is the natural. Man for me is support, strength … I will not accept a gay son.”
Katina, in turn, countered. “All I can say is: God is teaching us to live with love, to be tolerant and not to judge other people. Love is love, and it is a wonderful feeling. I think everyone is free to love anyone who wants.”
However, in 2022, they reconciled and sang together again. Currently, Katina is married and has two children, while Volkova is also the mother of two children.
