Yesterday Tuesday Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkab had pointed out that, If Israel does not fulfill his obligations in respect of humanitarian aidhis country will push for the suspension of the EU-Israeli connection agreement.
The 27 EU member states are divided in terms of the attitude they must take over Israel. Some, such as Germany, insist Israel’s right to defend itself after its attack Hamas on 7 October 2023in accordance with international law. But others, such as Spain, denounce the “genocide” that Israel commits against the Palestinians in Gaza.
A European Commission report presented at the end of June in the 27 Member States said Israel violates an article in the EU Connection Agreement concerning Human Rights.
The Commission has since examined her answer, discussing several options such as prohibiting some exports or reviewing visa providing policy to Israeli etc.
The proposal presented on Monday is one of the most moderate. It provides for the suspension of Israel’s participation in the European Horizon Research Funding Program.
The EU is Israel’s main trading partner.
