The Court of European Union rejected the line of the government of Georgia Meloni for immigration and the creation of closed detention centers in Albania.

The verdict of European judges emphasizes that “the Member States of the European Union cannot include in the list of safe countries of origin of immigrants, states that do not provide sufficient levels of protection to all of their residents”. It is a major point in the Rome government’s confrontation with Italian justice, which in the past few months ordered the liberation of many immigrants who were transferred to the two closed centers of Albania, precisely because they did not come from safe countries. They should not return to states where there is insufficient security for minorities, respect for sexual orientation and human rights in general.

European judges add that this approach will remain in force until June 2026 when new rules are implemented for all member states. Until then, the judges of each country will have the right to control and intervene, with their decisions on each list of safe countries drawn up by governments.

Sewing in Melon’s policy

It is clear that this decision is weakening the government of Georgia Meloni, which has so far argued that in the management of migration and refugees there should be no intervention by justice. In a statement by the Italian government, it is emphasized today that “once again justice- this time the European- is claiming responsibilities that do not have the moments of political responsibility.”

According to the press, the two structures that he created in Yader and Senzin, Northern Albania last year, operated for only five days at a cost of 114,000 euros per 24 hours. In recent months, from centers for asylum seekers, Italy has turned them into structures where irregular migrants are transported to expulsion. In this case, however, the judges ruled that many proceedings did not respect the current legislation. Today’s European Justice verdict was issued at the time that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Melonie was in Constantinople for a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A meeting that is expected to take part by the Prime Minister of the Temporary Tripoli Government, Abnul Hamid Dbamba. Their main topic of discussion is migration and management of migratory flows.
