Initially, a private meeting with US President Donald Trump will be held by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski at the White House on Monday, before expanding talks with European leaders, the German ARD reports in a report.

Security guarantees for Ukraine, territorial issues and procedures will be the central issues of talks that will take place tomorrow at the White House, according to government sources cited by ARD public television. The stay of Chancellor Friedrich Mertz in the US capital is also expected to last only a few hours.

According to ARD’s report, Friedrich Mertz will arrive at the White House on Monday afternoon and his return flight is scheduled for 17:00 or 18:00 (local time). On the agenda of the meeting will be security guarantees, territorial issues and process issues, such as whether the negotiations on the peace agreement are necessary to precede a ceasefire. These are also the key issues of discussion at the ongoing teleconferences.

Foreign Minister Johann Vandeful, for his part, said that the Chancellor Mertz’s journey to Washington shows how seriously the German government is taking into account efforts for a peacekeeping solution in Ukraine. “Germany is consciously leading here. We know that we are on critical days of negotiations and we will allocate all the burden of our foreign policy to ensure that it is a good week for Ukraine. We will not leave President Zelenski alone on this difficult path of negotiations, but we will defend international law with him, “Mr Vandeful said earlier today, shortly before leaving for his trip to Asia.

The Chancellor’s participation in tomorrow’s talks in the White House was also welcomed by the Christian Union expert (CDU/CSU) on foreign policy Normoler Reggen: “This shows their solidarity with Ukraine and its president. The heads of governments and states of the European Union rightly consider the Trump-Chalenski meeting extremely important, “Mr Ragen told the Rheinische Post.
