Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski described today’s debate in Brussels as “very useful”, stressing that there is clear support for Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty, with a common position that “borders cannot change by force”. He emphasized that critical issues must be resolved in a tripartite format with the participation of Ukraine, the United States and the Russian president.

He described as a “historical decision” that the US is ready to participate in security guarantees for Ukraine. As he noted, these guarantees must be “practical”, providing protection “on land, in the air and the sea”, with the active involvement of Europe.

“We, of course, discussed how deaths would stop as soon as possible,” he said, adding that a common perception of how a peace deal should be, “fair, immediate and effective.”

In detail the statement by Zelenski:

I am grateful to all the participants of the coalition of the willing for today’s debate in Brussels – the eve of the meeting in Washington with President Trump. It was very useful. We continue to coordinate our common positions. There is clear support for Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty. Everyone agrees that borders should not change with violence. Everyone argues that the key issues must be resolved by the involvement of Ukraine in a tripartite form – Ukraine, the US and the Russian leader.

This is a historic decision that the United States is ready to participate in security guarantees for Ukraine. Security guarantees, as a result of our joint work, must really be very practical, provide protection to land, air and sea, and must be developed with Europe’s participation.

Of course, we also discussed how to stop the killings as soon as possible. We are working on a common vision of how a peace deal should be – truly fair, fast and effective. Thanks!
