The Turkish Foreign Minister spoke about the intransigence of the Greek Cypriot side, which undermined all efforts for a solution. Mevlüt Tsavousogluin a joint press conference with the “foreign minister” of the pseudo-state, Thaksin Ertugrouloglou, as broadcast by KYPE.
Tsavousoglou stated that the Cyprus issue is one of Turkey’s top priorities and claimed that “the uncompromising mentality of the Greek Cypriot side undermined all efforts for a solution.”
He also said that “the initiative for Varosia (opening of the enclosed city) is fully compatible with international law “and added that” the legal rights and security of the Turkish Cypriot people must be guaranteed. The solution must be fair, permanent and sustainable. “
He claimed that the Turkish side made “constructive and creative ideas, a good effort, but the uncompromising mentality of the Greek Cypriot side undermined all efforts for a solution.”
“This mentality, which destroyed the partnership state in 1963, rejected the Annan plan in 2004. In 2017, it left the table in Crans Montana. Last year, we saw the same dishonest attitude from them in Geneva. The Greek Cypriots rejected the model of federation from the beginning. “Now, when we said ‘the federation can no longer exist’, they started embracing this model,” Tsavousoglou said.
Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu said that “Turkey is determined to protect both its own rights on its own continental shelf in the eastern Mediterranean and the rights of the Turkish Cypriots, who are the equal and joint owners of the island.” It has shown this so far in the field of action and at the negotiating table. That determination is still valid today. “
For his part, Thaksin Ertugrouloglou said that “the Cyprus issue is not just an issue between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, it is an issue of the Turkish nation in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
