US President Donald Trump phoned Victor Orban on Monday, following talks with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski and European leaders to discuss with the Hungarian Prime Minister because of the European Union with the European Union.

The call came from Trump’s discussions with European leaders who had gathered in the White House to examine ways of ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. At some point, the Europeans asked the US president to use his influence on Orban to press the nationalist leader to oppose Ukraine’s attempt to join the EU, according to Bloomberg.

Ukraine seeks to join the EU within a security guaranteed package, which aims to further prevent Russia’s territorial aspirations if a truce is applied to end the war, which lasts more than three years.

During a conversation with Trump, Hungary also expressed interest in hosting the next round of talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenski. Following Monday’s discussions, Trump announced that he is pursuing a summit at the leadership level between Russia and Ukraine, which will be followed by a trilateral meeting in which he himself will attend. The time and place of conduct remain unclear.

Trump made two telephone calls: one to Putin and, as the first time is revealed, one in Orban, which followed an extra, extraordinary European leaders’ meeting at the Oval Office.

The Hungarian prime minister did not confirm the communication, while White House spokesman Caroline Levit refused on Tuesday to clarify whether Budapest is among the cities examined for the Putin -Zelenski Summit. Many locations remain on the table.

Orban himself, however, posted a message on Tuesday showing that he heard the request for Ukraine’s accession to the EU, but does not intend to retreat: “Ukraine’s accession to the European Union does not provide any security guarantee. Therefore, linking the integration with security guarantees is unnecessary and dangerous, “he wrote.
