French researcher Laurent Vinatiter, who is serving a three -year prison sentence in Russia, is now accused of espionage, according to court documents released today.

According to a document that came under the possession of the French Agency, Vianatier will be brought before a court, this time for espionage, a charges that carries a sentence of up to 20 years.

The hearing is set for August 25.

The vinaet, who worked for a Swiss non -governmental organization that mediates in conflict, is among the Western arrested in Russia in recent years, amid diplomatic tension due to the war in Ukraine. Paris has called for its liberation, accusing Russia of keeping Western citizens hostage. Vinatiter was found guilty of gathering information on Russian weapons systems and violating the law on “foreign agents” because he had not been declared as such.

Vinatiter worked as a consultant at the Geneva -based humanitarian dialogue center and is a specialist on Russia and other former Soviet democracies. He had stated that in the context of his work “he presented Russia’s interests in international relations”.
