European citizens are to a large extent Satisfied with the EU’s role in securing access to COVID-19 vaccines and have a positive attitude towards vaccines, as a Extraordinary Eurobarometer survey published yesterday.
Results confirm the positive trends identified in the first survey conducted in May 2021. According to the results of the February 2022 survey, more than seven in ten Europeans (71%) believe that the European Union has a key role to play in securing access to COVID-19 vaccines in their country.
Furthermore, 53% (+ 6%) are satisfied with the way the EU managed the vaccination strategywhile 38% (-7%) are not satisfied.
In national levelthe 48% of European citizens are satisfied with the way the their national government has administer the vaccination. The vast majority (77%) believes that “Overall, the benefits of vaccines outweigh the potential risks”, 74% believe that vaccines approved in the EU are safe and 71% believe that vaccines are the only way to end the pandemic. Seven out of ten respondents (70%) believe that, in order to end the pandemic, it is vital that all countries of the world have access to vaccines.
However, 55% are still afraid that vaccines will have long-term effects that we do not yet know (-7% compared to 2021).
Finally, 44% (-7%) of Europeans would like to receive more information on the effectiveness of vaccines, while 42% (-3%) would like more information on how vaccines are developed, tested and approved. Health professionals, doctors, nurses and pharmacists remain the most reliable source of information (62%), followed by national health authorities (49%).
