The US is ready to provide military means of information and supervision to any western “security net” for Ukraine after the war, as well as to participate in a European country’s air defense initiative, according to the Financial Times citing European and Ukrainian officials.
US President Donald Trump told European leaders last week that America would participate in the “coordination” of security guarantees for Ukraine after the war. It is noted that this is a constant demand of Kiev in order to prevent a future attack by Russia in the event of a peace agreement.
Senior US officials have since transferred to their European counterparts, in many discussions, that Washington is ready to contribute “strategic means”, such as information, surveillance and recognition (ISR), administration and control systems and air defense systems, to support any European officials.
The “alliance of willing”, led by the United Kingdom and France, has been committed to protecting Ukraine after the war from future Russian aggression.
However, European officials admit in particular that any troops could only be done with the support of the US, which will oversee and protect European forces.
The US offer, which has been put forward in a series of meetings between national security officials and military leaders from the US and major European countries in recent days, requires European governments’ commitment to develop tens of thousands of soldiers in Ukraine, according to officials.
Washington, however, could even recall the offer, they warn themselves. However, this is a significant shift to the stance of the Trump government, which, before a meeting in Washington, had ruled out any US participation in the protection of post -war Ukraine, which encourages European officials who have been pushing Trump for months to offer more support.
Trump has repeatedly called on both sides to reach a peacekeeping deal, but Moscow and Kiev remain far from reaching key issues, such as post -war control and security guarantees. Russian President Vladimir Putin insists that any guarantees should include Russia, which for Ukraine is considered unacceptable.
The US is still opposed to developing their own troops in Ukraine, officials added. Other officials of the Trump government, including Defense Minister Pitt Hegshez, are wary of any involvement in post -war guarantees, fearing that this will involve the US in a future conflict.
Trump said on Monday that “we have not even discussed the details” of security guarantees for Ukraine. “We will participate from the support side. We will help them, “he told reporters.
Last week he told Fox News that the US is “willing to help” a European power “probably, by air means”.
Washington is already supplying Ukraine with Patriot anti -aircraft systems, but post -war support would include US aircraft, logistics support and earthly radar, which would strengthen and make a flight ban and an umbrella.
What will security guarantees include in Ukraine
In the context of any peace agreement, the much superior US capabilities in information, surveillance and administration will allow satellite monitoring of a truce and the effective coordination of Western powers in the country.
The Western capitals have drawn up a rough plan that would include a demilitarized zone, which will probably be supervised by a neutral third -country peacekeeping forces, agreed by Ukraine and Russia.
Behind, a clearly more powerful defense border will be kept by Ukrainian troops equipped and trained by NATO armies, according to three officials.
A European deterrence force will be deeper in Ukraine as a third line of defense, with the support of US media.
However, even with the possible US assistance, public opinion and politicians in many European countries remain cautious about the possibility of troops to Ukraine.
Trump’s peace initiative has produced limited results so far. The Kremlin rejected Trump’s proposal for a meeting of Putin with Zelenski for peace talks, while the Russian president continues to raise maximalist demands, including territorial claims, surpassing Ukraine’s red lines.
European Commission spokesman Paula Pinio said Tuesday: “After a meeting in Washington last week … One of the key conclusions was to assign national security advisers to consider how security guarantees could be reflected. Soon we need to have information from this team about what will be proposed. “
Zelenski said he was informed by his military leadership “on work with all partners in the context of the coalition of the willing”. “The pace of the job must be accelerated,” he said, adding: “The defense of security guarantees must be specified in the near future.”
