More than 1,000 people died in a landslide that completely destroyed a village in the Mara Mountains, West Sudan, in the Darfour area, leaving only one survivor behind, the Sudan (SLM/A) movement announced Monday.

The landslide struck the community on August 31, after many days of heavy rainfall, according to the organization, led by Abdulohid Mohammed Nour.

The movement, which controls the field of vast Darfour, called on the UN and international relief organizations to help recover the corpses of the victims – men, women and children.

Many of the victims had left to be saved from the war between the regular army and the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (DIFI), which continues to rage since April 2023, and fled to Maras, despite the shortages of food and medicines in the area.
