NATO takes “very seriously” interference with GPS signals and the alliance works “day night” to prevent this interference to ensure that “it does not happen again,” NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Tuesday.
He was asked about the interference with the GPS system of European Commission President Ursula von der Layen on Sunday, while traveling to Bulgaria, an incident in which there were suspicions of Russian intervention.
It is recalled that the aircraft of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Layenlost access to GPS navigation services while approaching Plovdiv Airport in Bulgaria On Sunday, forcing pilots to land using traditional maps. Officials who know the incident told the Financial Times that he is treated as a suspicious Russian intervention.
The Commission’s spokesman confirmed yesterday at noon that the aircraft’s navigation system accepted interference and added that the incident was being investigated. He noted that Bulgaria told the Commission that he was suspected that the incident was “blatant” by Russia.
According to the NYT report, “the GPS of the entire airport area has been extinguished.” The plane circles for almost an hour before the pilot decides to land manually using analog maps. The official described the interruption as “undeniable intervention”.
The interruption is associated with GPS interference, a practice that prevents or deforms satellite navigation. European governments have expressed concern that increasing interference with Russia associated with Russia could cause serious risks to aviation.
Similar incidents have been recorded in the Baltic Sea and the Eastern European States border with Russiaaffecting not only aircraft but also ships and political navigation systems.
Von der Laien traveled from Warsaw to Philippopolis to meet Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zeliazkov and visit a defensive factory.
Speaking in Bulgaria, he said: “Russian President Vladimir Putin has not changed and will not change. It is a predator. It can only be controlled through strong deterrence. ”
Bulgaria has been a major European military support supplier in Ukraine, initially sending Soviet era equipment and later providing artillery and defensive products from its industry.
Von der Layen left Bulgaria with the same aircraft without any other unexpected.
