About 270 corpses have been recovered from the secluded village of Darfour, in West Sudanburied in mud after a landslide, according to a spokesman for a local political authority who visited the spot.
Since the landslide, late on Sunday, after heavy rains, hundreds of people were killed in the village of Tarasin, in an inaccessible valley in Jabel Mara’s massif, estimates UN. The exact number of victims and damage is difficult to calculate as this zone is largely controlled by the Sudan Liberation Army movement (MLS). The first report spoke of 300-1,000 dead.
“Hundreds are still under the ruins, houses and crops buried” in mud, said the Mujib al -Rahman Muhammad al -Zubair, the president of the political authority in the zones controlled by the MLS. “Many animals were also killed, everything is under the mud now” and the landslide also influenced the sources of the area, he said speaking on a satellite phone at the French Agency.
Photos that MLS released today show a small crowd of people attempting to the place where the landslide and the village have been covered by a thick layer of mud, uprooted trees and broken houses. About 150 people left the area to find refuge elsewhere after the landslide, according to the international immigration organization.
The area is a few tens of kilometers from the city El Fasserthe capital of the northern Darfour, which has been besieged for a year by the paramilitaries of the rapid support forces, fighting the country’s army. The MLS has so far not been involved in the deadly battles between the Army and the DIA, in this country that is experiencing “the worst modern humanitarian crisis”, according to the UN.
