The Ukrainian flag has been flying at Chernobyl again since Saturday. The flag was hoisted at the nuclear power plant on Saturday morning as workers sang the national anthem and celebrated the departure of Russian troops who had occupied the site for weeks.
“The flag-raising ceremony was attended by the station’s operational staff, who ensure and continue to ensure the nuclear and radioactive safety of the facility in the difficult conditions of the occupation,” Energoatom told its Telegram channel.
The Ukrainian state Nuclear power company clarified that all Russian forces have now left the area. Russian troops first occupied the decommissioned station north of Kiev last month after the invasion began.
Ukraine says it is working with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to find out what happened at the station while Russian forces were in control.
“Russia has acted irresponsibly in Chernobyl in any case, from not allowing the station staff to carry out their duties to digging trenches in the contaminated areas,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said on Friday.
