Unexpected political partnerships are not uncommon for US President Donald Trump. One of the least expected, however, is his relationship with Mexico’s left -wing lead, Claudia Sinbaum.

Although they have a different political philosophy – Trump’s “First America” movement has its roots in American nationalism, while the “Fourth Transformation” movement of Sinbaum in statism and humanity – the two have entered into a strange relationship of cooperation.

Trump often plays Sinbaum (“it’s actually an amazing woman”), while she devotes much of her time trying to meet Washington’s growing demands.

Although they have not met so far, they have spoken 14 times by phone – shows the depth of their relationship.

Their unexpected “chemistry” was fully seen this week during the long -awaited visit by Foreign Minister Marko Rubio to Mexico – a carefully choreographed meeting, full of smiles. Both governments have pledged to cooperate more closely to strengthen the border, dealing with cartels and limiting Fentanyl and weapons trafficking.

“It is the closer cooperation of the security we have ever had, perhaps with any country but certainly in the history of US -Mexico relationships,” Rubio said at a press conference, using English and Spanish alternately. “President Seinbaum and her government are worthy of credit, as they have undertaken issues that had been unsolved for a long time.”

The statement is impressed, as Rubio himself had previously shaken the mentor and political patron of Seinbaum, former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, accusing him of “handing over entire areas of the country to the cartels”. Just last year, he had canceled visas and imposes restrictions on Brazilians linked to a program that brought Cuban doctors to Brazil. Mexico applies a similar medical program with Cuba, which in addition supports Havana with multi -million dollars on fuel. However, Cuban American Rubio made no public reference to them during his visit.

His mild attitude reflects two basic data: first, that US -Mexico relations are so complicated and their economies so interconnected that no government can withstand a frontal conflict. Secondly, that if they can find common ground on such a difficult issue as security, the way for new agreements in trade, duties and investment, may be paved, which is urgently needed.

The White House’s renewed mood for close cooperation is partly due to Seinbaum’s adaptive attitude towards Washington. Nearly a year after taking power, it has contributed to the restriction of migratory flows to the US, dramatically increased drug seizures and allowed more than 50 cartel leaders to be issued. At the same time, it reduced the homicide index, imposed duties on Chinese products and signed agreements on the management of cross -border waters. All achievements that the White House presents as its own victories.

The joint statement of security this week gives President Claudia Seinbaum a first political victory after months of obvious retreats in US pressures, putting a clear framework for respect for Mexico’s territorial domination and paving the way for new trading and duties.

The wording of the agreement speaks of security cooperation “based on the principles of reciprocity, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, common and differentiated responsibility, as well as mutual trust”. In this way, the scenario of unilateral American strikes in Mexican territory appears to be excluded, a possibility that would be humiliated for Sinbaum. This development is particularly important, as only recently the US has carried out a deadly caribbean operation against a ship transporting drugs from Venezuela.

The agreement also highlights another point of convergence: despite his frequent attacks on Mexico, Donald Trump seems willing to respect the country’s right to make its own decisions, an attitude that is in line with the spirit of the Morena movement. In contrast to the Biden government, which funded democratic institutions and NGOs, causing the anger of her predecessor Seinbaum, Lopez Obrador, Trump avoids being involved in Mexican’s internal political issues, leaving the Morena to move on to Morena.

Although the safety pact has not proved as ambitious as some have expected, it creates an important diplomatic framework for coordinating the numerous and often non -aligned services involved in security issues, especially on the American side. “A cooperative approach is needed to tackle the most sensitive aspect of the US-Mexican political agenda. The fact that both governments recognize it is clearly a positive step, “said former Mexican Deputy Foreign Minister Hulian Ventura.

The deal also creates favorable prospects for Sinbaum’s next big goal: the revision of the USMCA trade agreement, the removal of certain duties that continue to hit Mexico and the elimination of non -tariff barriers.

Just a few days ago, the New York Times reported that Sinbaum appeared “indignant” with the endless demands of the White House. Rubio visit and its positive climate may reduce this pressure. Compared to other US partners such as India, South Korea or Brazil, Mexico is in a privileged position. As the real estate agents say: location, location, location.
