A bomb blast near a nightclub in the Azerbaijani capital has killed at least 40 people and injured hundreds more, officials say.
“According to preliminary information, people were killed and injured in the accident,” the Ministry of Emergency Situations said in a statement posted on its website.
International media reports say at least one person was killed and 31 were injured.
The number of people who were at the scene at the time of the explosion was not specified, but the announcement stressed that search and rescue operations are underway. Photos of rescuers digging in the rubble of the building were posted on the ministry’s website.
The ministry said it had “received information (about) an explosion at a facility on Tarlan Aliyarbeyov Street” in Baku at 03:00 on Sunday, local time (02:00 Greek time).
The ministry added that the fire was extinguished in the nightclub.
