Former Brazilian President Zaire Bolsonaru was convicted of conspiracy to carry out a military coup, according to the BBC. Three of the five judges of the Supreme Court found the 70 -year -old guilty of a leading role in a conspiracy aimed at staying in power after his defeat in the 2022 elections by his leftist opponent, Luis Inasio Lula da Silva.

Although he failed to gather adequate support from the army, he prompted the invasion of Bolsonaru supporters into government buildings on January 8, 2023, according to the judges’ ruling.

A judge acquitted Bolsonaru and one latter has not yet voted, but the simple majority is enough to condemn the former Brazilian president, who may now face decades of prison. His sentence will be announced on Friday. According to Bloomberg, the charges are sentenced to 43 years in prison, although judges could take into account the age of 70 -year -old Bolsonaros and his health problems in determining the sentence. Earlier this year, the court ruled that former President Fernando Color, 76, could serve his sentence for corruption under house arrest.

The fate of the former president was sealed on Thursday when Judge Carmén Lúcia voted. He was found guilty of all five categories: an attempted coup, incitement to an armed criminal organization, an attempt to abolish the democratic rule of law, as well as for two additional charges related to property damage during the invasion of buildings on Brasilia on 8 January.
