Kim Yo Jong – sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un – warned today that joint US, South Korea and Japan military exercises may have “negative consequences” for the three countries, according to North Korean agencies today.

South Korea, Japan and the US will conduct their annual defense exercises called “Freedom Edge” since September 15, with the aim of upgrading their potential for the treatment of nuclear and missile threats from North Korea, as announced by the South Korean forces.

“The reckless demonstration of power by the US, Japan and South Korea in the wrong place, in particular around the Korean Republic of Korea, will undoubtedly have negative consequences for themselves,” Kim Yo Jong told KCNA.

South Korea and the US also intend to carry out the IRON MACE military exercise next week, which includes a simulation of the use of nuclear and conventional forces to address threats from North Korea, according to South Korean publications.

If the “enemy forces” continue to boast about their power through these common military exercises, North Korea will receive countermeasures “more specialized and stronger,” said PAK Jong Tson, a leading official of the ruling party.

Pyongyang is used to denouncing common military exercises, which it describes as “rehearsals for invasion”, and in some cases responds to rocket tests. However, Seoul and Washington assure that their exercises are purely defensive.
