The innovative Brazilian composer, famous for the jazz and traditional music mix, Hermeto Pascoal, died at the age of 89.

Born on June 22, 1936 in a rural settlement northeast of Alagoa, in Brazil, he could not work outdoors due to his albinism.

Paskal and learned music on his own while spending his days indoors.

At the age of 10, he began playing in dances and weddings before continuing to play forró and traditional Brazilian music throughout the area.

By obscurity and poverty to global recognition

In the late 1950s, he moved to Rio de Janeiro and discovered the city scene, appearing in nightclubs and joining a radio orchestra.

The combination of jazz and traditional folk style has caught the attention of Brazil’s largest stars: singer Elis Regina appeared with Paskal, as well as percussionist Ayrto Moreira.

The latter accompanied him on a US tour, where he met Miles Davis.

Despite gaining respect for the celebrities of the world of jazz, Paskal always rejected the label as a “jazz musician” saying that he had a lot to Brazilian music, such as Tsorino and Saba.
