Poland observed increased activity of unmanned aircraft (drones) near the border with Belarus at night, the government announced today, after the closure of borders in view of Minsk’s military high schools with Moscow’s ally.

Poland’s concerns, a member of the NATO and EU alliance over the Zapad military exercises (West), were reinforced when about 21 Russian unmanned aircraft entered its airspace on September 9th to 10th.

Interior Minister Marcin Kiervinsky, asked why the borders are still closed as Zapad military high schools have been completed, said Poland would open them when it is safe.

“Last night, the border guard observed increased activity of Belarusian and Russian unmanned aircraft to try to cross Poland’s airspace,” he said. “It is clear that the situation at the Poland -White -Eukoria border remains very, very tense.”

Kiervinsky did not give further details. A spokesman for the interior ministry said there was no Polish intervention or attempt to overthrow unmanned aircraft.

Belarus and Russia have reinforced their ties during Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, with Minsk allowing Moscow to send troops through its territory. Poland is one of Ukraine’s great supporters in war.

Three railway border crossings for commercial trains have already been closed.
