Following the example of other states, Malta will announce that she is formally recognizing a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in New York today, as the prime minister’s office said.
Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal recognized a Palestinian state yesterday, a move aimed at promoting the two states to end the war in Gaza.
France and many other states are expected to make the same decision today.
Malta Prime Minister Robert Ambela announced for the first time plans to recognize a Palestinian state in May, but the United Nations meeting was subsequently postponed.
Malta has long been in favor of efforts for a solution of two states, while maintaining diplomatic relations with Israel.
The wife of former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has even lived on the island for several years.
Late yesterday, posting on Facebook, Ambela welcomed the cargo delivery with flour offered by Malta to Gaza “on the eve of the recognition by the Palestinian state”. He said the recognition of a Palestinian state is “historic” and that Malta remains in the achievement of peace in the region.
