Syrian President Ahmed al-Saraa reiterated his call to Washington to officially lift US sanctions imposed under the decree Caesar act of 2019, during his visit to New York to attend the UN General Assembly.

It is noted that this is the first presence of Syrian leader for nearly six decades.

Saraa, a former al-Qaeda leader, led the rebel forces that overthrew the Bashar al-Assad government last year. US President Donald Trump met him in Riyadh in May and ordered the lifting of most sanctions, but the 2019 Caesar Syria Civil Protection Act law remains in force.

Speaking at a summit on the sidelines of the Annual General Assembly, Al-Saraa said that sanctions imposed on the previous Syrian leadership are no longer justified and that the Syrians are increasingly perceived as measures that are directly turning against them.

“We have a great mission to build the economy,” Al-Saraa said.

“Syria has a variety of workforce. People love the job, they are in their DNA. So don’t worry, just lift the sanctions and you’ll see the results. “

Al-Saraa, the first Syros president to participate in the General Assembly since 1967, is expected to speak his first speech.

Members of Congress are discussing the abolition of the Caesar law, which has imposed extensive sanctions on Syria on Assad.
