About 2.3 million people were left without electricity on Friday in the southeast of Mexico, due to a blackout that caused chaos especially at the Kancun tourist resort, authorities said.

Four hours after the extensive power outage, the supply was restored to almost 50% of the areas affected by the states of Yucatan, Kambece and Kidana Rh.

Light traffic lights on the streets of Cancun did not operate, causing traffic chaos, while only shops with generators remained open, according to a French News Agency (AFP) correspondent at the popular tourist resort.
