Herdecke, Germany

Iris Stalzer, a Social Democrat, is expected to take office in November, after being elected mayor of Herdeke in the Ruhr area.

Although the motive remains unclear, the case awakened memories of the murder of conservative local government president Walter Lubke in 2019, a supporter of then Chancellor Angela Merkel’s policy for refugees, who was shot by a far -right.

Four years before that, Enriete Reker was stabbed by a far -right extremist the day before he was elected mayor of Cologne. Reker has now fully recovered and is expected to leave her post later this year.
