Following the launch of the fire in the Gaza Strip, the United Nations Global Food Program (RIF), which is based in Rome, appealed to the Israeli government yesterday to allow the surrender of more humanitarian aid as soon as possible.
“The moment is vital to the world in Gaza,” Martin Frick, a representative of Pep in Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein, explained, speaking to the RND.
“The ceasefire must bring safe border crossings and clear security guarantees for helping aid now,” Mr Frick continued, stressing that he counts every hour.
Sixty thousand tonnes of food are ready to distribute, are in border passes, while another 100,000 tonnes are transported to the area. This quantity is sufficient to supply the Palestinian enclave for three months, provided that access is safe, reliable and unhindered, the official added.
Within a month, the PEP intends to distribute bread, flour and food parcels to 1.6 million Palestinians, Mr Frick said.
Access to the Gaza Strip is controlled by the Israeli authorities, who must grant entry permit and guarantee the safety of humanitarian vehicles.
The ceasefire agreement came into force yesterday Friday at noon (local time and time in Greece).
