Three people were killed and dozens injured, many seriously, when a bus carrying workers to a factory overturned in northwestern Serbia, local authorities said.
The accident occurred on a road connecting the city of Sremska Mitrovica with the village of Jarak, which is 70 kilometers from Belgrade.
The double-decker bus “ran off the road for unknown reasons and overturned,” the interior ministry said, adding that its driver had been arrested.
The photos released by the authorities show the bus overturned in a ditch.
Three passengers were killed, the mayor of Sremska Mitrovica, Branislav Nedimovic, announced this evening, speaking on RTS public television. Earlier, the Ministry of the Interior spoke of two dead and about 80 injured. The director of the local hospital, Vojšav Mirnic, explained that one of the wounded succumbed.
“Of the 61 patients who were taken to the hospital, 39 are being treated,” Mirnic said, noting that many are “in serious condition.”
The bus was carrying workers at a HealthCare factory that makes memory foam pillows and mattresses. HealthCare is a subsidiary of a Chinese company.
