Disgust at the UN over the Bouka massacre
The Ukrainian president made gruesome descriptions of the torture inflicted on Bukha by the Russian army. Volodymyr Zelensky, in his speech at the special meeting of the Security Councilduring which he compared Russia to ISIS.
Note that the following video contains very harsh images:
He began his speech by saying: “Yesterday, I came back from Μπουκαrecently liberated by Russian troops, not far from Kyiv. So there is not one crime which they did not commit. The Russian army deliberately killed anyone who served our country.
They killed, shot and killed women who were outside their homes and just trying to find their own people alive. They killed entire families, adults and children. “And they tried to burn the corpses.”
The Ukrainian president went on to say that he spoke in memory of the dead: “In memory of the civilians who died, who were shot in the back of the head after being tortured. Some were shot in the streets. Others were thrown into the wells. That’s how they died. With torture. “They were killed in their apartments, their houses were blown up by grenades.”
“Citizens were crushed by tanks, while they sat in their cars in the middle of the street just for their pleasure. They cut limbs, they cut necks. “Women were raped and killed in front of their children.”
Zelensky continued: “I know, and you know very well, what the Russian representatives will say in response to the accusations about these crimes. They will accuse everyone just to justify their actions. They will say that there are different versions, that it is impossible to determine which of these versions is true. They will even say that the bodies were taken there and that all the videos are set up.
“But it is 2022. Now we have convincing evidence.”
The 5th EU Sanctions Package presented by von der Leyen
The fifth package of sanctions against Russia was presented by the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, via Twitter.
Yesterday at Ecofin meeting, European Commission Vice President Valdis Dobrovskis gave a taste of the measures, saying: “We are completing the fifth package of sanctions against Russia while promoting arrangements so that there are no ways to bypass them. We want the sanctions to be directed against the Putin regime and not to remain on paper “after today’s Ecofin meeting.
According to von der Leyen, the proposals include six points, including a ban on coal imports, a ban on transactions with four Russian banks and a blockade on road and sea transport.
The head of the Commission wrote on Twitter:
“Russia is waging a brutal, ruthless war, also against the civilian population of Ukraine.
We must maintain maximum pressure at this critical point.
So today we suggest a 5th package of sanctions
1. Prohibition of imports of coal from Russia, worth 4 billion euros per year, reducing another important source of revenue for Russia.
2. Complete ban on transactions in 4 major Russian banks, including VTB, the 2nd largest Russian bank.
3. Prohibition of access to EU ports by Russian ships and prohibition of road access to Russian and Belarusian transport companies.
4. Further € 10 billion export bans in critical sectors: advanced semiconductors, machinery and transport equipment
5. Specific new import bans, worth 5.5 billion euros.
6. Targeted measures, such as banning Russian companies from participating in public procurement in the EU and blocking any financial support, European or national, to Russian public bodies.
Finally, we propose more sanctions against individuals.
“We are also working on additional sanctions, including oil imports, and are considering some of the Member States’ ideas, such as taxes or specific payment channels, such as a guarantee account.”
