A hacker group associated with Vladimir Putin allegedly “hit” eight military its bases United Kingdompublishing hundreds of sensitive documents on the so-called dark web.
The attackers managed to gain access to the files by breaching the systems of a provider working with the British Ministry of Defence. This violation was characterized as “destructive” as the hackers bypassed her cyber defense of the armed forces targeting their foreign partner.
The Ministry of Defense is investigating the breach, which is believed to have been carried out by Russian team Lynx. Among the facilities affected is the Royal Air Force base in Suffolk, where US F-35 fighter jets are stationed.
The attack comes just days after a warning from the National Cyber Security Center raised serious concerns about the high number of cyber attacks in the UK, which reached record levels with 204 incidents recorded in the twelve months to September, according to the Daily Mail.
A spokesman for the British Ministry of Defense said: “We are taking a robust and proactive approach to cyber threats that could jeopardize national interests. We are actively investigating allegations that information related to the Department of Defense has been published on the dark web. To protect sensitive operational information, we will not provide further details.”
