The US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and the top White House adviser Jared Kushner are landing today Monday in Israel, according to Jewish media reports as the truce between Israel and Hamas is held up with obstacles.
Their visit is part of a concerted US effort to prevent further violations of the fledgling ceasefire a day after two Israeli army soldiers were killed in a Hamas attack and Israel responded with airstrikes across the Strip.
Earlier today, the Israel Defense Forces reported that it opened fire again on several Palestinian terrorists who approached troops in eastern Gaza City in the morning.
Several agents had been spotted crossing the Yellow Line in the Sejaya neighborhood and “posed an immediate threat” to troops, the IDF said.
“The forces fired on the terrorists who crossed the Yellow Line to eliminate the threat to the troops,” the army added.
Palestinian media reports that at least two people were killed in the area this morning.
Israel earlier warned Hamas members entrenched on the eastern side of the Yellow Line to evacuate immediately or face being targeted.
Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz claimed to have instructed the Israeli Armed Forces to convey this warning to Hamas through the US-led international monitoring mechanism overseeing the Gaza ceasefire.
“Any Hamas operative found across the Yellow Line in Israeli-controlled territory must evacuate immediately. Hamas leaders will bear responsibility for any incident,” Katz said in a statement.
“Anyone who remains in the area will be targeted without further warning to allow IDF troops to operate freely and immediately against any threat,” he stressed.
Katz added that “the protection of IDF soldiers is the highest priority and we will take all necessary measures to ensure this.”
On Sunday, Israel launched a series of attacks across Gaza after blaming Hamas for the attack that killed two IDF soldiers – Major Yaniv Kula, 26, and Sergeant Itay Yavetz – marking the first time Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire. Israeli attacks killed at least 44 people in various parts of Gaza on Sunday, according to figures from Gaza hospitals.
