South Korean police are expected to issue an arrest warrant for a woman who set fire to her apartment while trying to kill a cockroach with a makeshift flamethrower, according to South Korean media.
A woman in a neighboring apartment was killed after falling from a window trying to escape the spreading fire.
The attacker, who is in her 20s, told police she tried to burn a cockroach with a lighter and flammable spray, adding that she had used the same method in the past. However, on Monday, her house caught fire.
Police in the city of Osan said the woman may be charged with negligent fire and negligent homicide.
In 2018, an Australian man set his kitchen on fire while trying to kill cockroaches with a makeshift flamethrower made from insecticide spray, the BBC notes.
The woman who died in the fire in the city of Osan, a 30-year-old Chinese woman, lived on the fifth floor of the building with her husband and their two-month-old baby.
When they realized a fire had broken out, the couple opened the window of their home and called for help.
They handed their baby through the window to a neighbor in the next building, before trying to escape themselves.
The woman’s husband managed to climb onto the building next door. She tried to do the same, but fell out of the window. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead a few hours later.
Police said the couple tried to escape through the window because thick smoke from the fire had blocked the staircase, according to local media.
