Broadway musicians in New York threatened to go on strike today if an agreement is not reached with producers as part of an ongoing renegotiation of the terms of their contracts.

Dozens of shows and musicals could be affected by the protests, including the famous “The Lion King,” “Mamma Mia,” or “Aladdin,” according to a press release from the local chapter of the American Federation of Musicians.

“If we don’t have a new contract by Thursday morning, we are prepared to go on strike immediately. However, we remain hopeful that an agreement will be reached,” the union wrote.

Talks are expected to resume Wednesday between their union and the Broadway League, the association of producers of the industry that is a pillar of New York’s economy, whose shows attract millions of tourists each year.

The negotiations concern all the terms of their contracts (wages, insurance coverage, safety at work, etc.).

“Good faith negotiations are taking place at the negotiating table, not in the press,” the Broadway League said. “We value our musicians and are committed to working in good faith to reach a fair agreement.”
