After the uproar caused by the video showing an inmate of La Sade prison “receiving” with threats Nicolas Sarkozy – who since the day before yesterday is serving a 5-year prison sentence, an unprecedented and historic sentence – the Paris prosecutor’s office has announced that it has launched an investigation into the penitentiary over the incident.
“On October 22, 2025, the Paris prosecutor’s office was informed by the director of La Sante prisons of a video circulating on social media, apparently filmed by an inmate, in which he issued threats upon the arrival of Nicolas Sarkozy at the facility,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement emailed to Reuters.
As part of the research, 3 prisoners were interrogated – who were placed under increased police surveillance – and two cell phones were seized.
The 70-year-old former president of France from 2007 to 2012 was convicted of conspiring to raise campaign funds from Libya.
In the video in question, the prisoner shouts at Sarkozy and tells him: “We will take revenge for Gaddafi, we know it all, Sarkozy. Return the billions of dollars…”

At the same time, other videos from Sarkozy’s first night in prison, which was “terrifying” according to his lawyers, are circulating online.
Prisoners were constantly shouting at the former French president, harassing him and preventing him from sleeping, threatening to take revenge on the late Libyan leader.
“O Flesh, son of a @@@@, wake up! You killed Gaddafi…”

At the same time, for the protection of the former president, two security officers have been placed next to Sarkozy’s VIP cell in addition to the measures implemented by the prison administration, “because of his position and the threats against him”, as explained by the Minister of the Interior of France, Laurent Nunes.
Recently, Julien Fischmeister of the French branch of the International Prison Observatory, said that La Sade – although overcrowded – has recently been renovated and has better conditions than many other prisons.
But in any case, even in the VIP wing, Fischmeister warns that prison could be a “disturbing experience” for Sarkozy.
A tough-on-crime ex-president, he once referred to youth rioters in the suburbs as “scum”, threatening to “cleanse” them with powerful police water “blasts”.
His lawyer said the former president is being held in an isolated and specially protected wing of the prison.
He does not enjoy special treatment and has applied for parole, according to his lawyer.
