The president of the USA Donald Trump will not deploy federal agents to San Franciscohe and the mayor of the city announced in separate posts today.
The decision is a surprise U-turn by Trump, who has been pushing cities run by Democratic mayors to step up their crackdown on crime and illegal immigration.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said Trump called him Wednesday night to say he was suspending his plans to deploy federal forces. Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem confirmed this decision in a phone call with her this morning.
“We have work to do and we would welcome our continued cooperation with the FBI, DEA, ATF and the Department of Justice to get drugs and drug dealers off the streets, but having the military and a militarized immigration enforcement force in our city would hinder our recovery. We appreciate the fact that the president understands that we are the global epicenter of technology, and when San Francisco is strong, our country is strong,” added the mayor.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump confirmed that he is canceling the deployment to San Francisco because the mayor asked him “very nicely, to give him a chance” to see if he can handle the problems himself.
Trump had hinted that San Francisco would be the next city to send the National Guard, as he has done in other cities run by Democratic mayors. The San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday that the US government would send more than 100 federal agents to bolster local anti-illegal immigration forces.
