Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said today he will tell US President Donald Trump that the tariffs he imposed on his country were “a mistake” when they are likely to meet in Malaysia at the ASEAN summit this weekend.
“I am very interested in this meeting. I am ready to defend Brazil’s interests and demonstrate that the tariffs imposed on Brazil are wrong,” he said at a press conference at the regional organization’s general secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Officials from the two countries told AFP this week that discussions were underway for a meeting between the two leaders at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations regional summit in Kuala Lumpur.
Donald Trump has slapped 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods and mainly targeted Judge Alexandra de Moraes and his wife for economic sanctions, accusing him of orchestrating “a witch hunt” over the sentencing of former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison for a coup attempt in September.
But tensions between Trump and Lula began to ease after the two leaders, both 79, met briefly on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September.
They then spoke by phone in early October and spoke for the first time about the possibility of meeting at the ASEAN summit.
At that meeting, Lula asked Donald Trump to remove the excessive tariffs affecting a portion of Brazil’s exports.
