Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said talks on the supply of used Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from Qatar and Oman are progressing positively, following contacts he had during his recent tour of the Gulf.
According to a Reuters report, Ankara has proposed to its European allies and the United States ways to quickly acquire advanced fighters, as part of its plan to buy a total of 40 Eurofighter Typhoons, as well as American F-16s and F-35s.
A source with knowledge of the talks said that as part of the deal it is discussing with Britain, Turkey is expected to receive 12 slightly used Eurofighter Typhoon fighters from Qatar and Oman to meet the immediate operational needs of its air force.
Speaking to reporters on his flight back from Oman, Erdogan noted that the talks involve many technical details but are “progressing positively”.
“We want to complete these deals quickly and, God willing, make our Air Force much stronger. It will become much stronger with these aircraft,” the Turkish president said, according to excerpts released by his office.
