Court in Turkey today rejected accusations of “electoral fraud” in the process of nominating the leadership of the largest opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) at his congress in 2023, charges which if accepted by the court would lead to the removal of the legitimacy of his leadership CHP and the removal of its leader Ozgyur Ezel.
Critics of the Erdogan government charged that the prosecution was aimed at weakening the CHP, Turkey’s oldest political party, which won a landslide victory over President Tayyip Erdogan’s AKP in 2024 local elections and is growing in strength according to opinion polls.
Ozgur Ezel himself had called the prosecution a “judicial coup” against the CHP.
Today’s court ruling follows a spate of prosecutions against the CHP and its cadres over the past year that has landed scores of Kemalist officials and elected officials in jail.
If the court ruled in favor of delegitimizing the leadership of the Republican People’s Party, it would create disorganization and disunity in the ranks of Turkey’s main opposition party, strengthening the position of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.
After the announcement of the court decision, the index of the Istanbul stock exchange strengthened by 3.4%, as did the Turkish lira.
