The US defense secretary will tour several countries in the Indo-Pacific next week, the Pentagon announced today, which considers the region a “first priority”.

On this occasion, Pete Hegseth will visit Hawaii, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam and South Korea. It aims to pressure US allies to increase their defense spending “in the face of intensifying regional threats”.

This will be Hegseth’s second tour of the region. In March he had visited Guam, the Philippines and Japan. In this case, it will coincide with a visit to Asia by President Donald Trump, who on Thursday will meet in South Korea with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

On his trip to Singapore in May, where he participated in the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s largest security and defense forum, Hegseth said the US was “adjusting (its strategy) to prevent any attack from Communist China”.

“The threat posed by China is real and may be imminent,” he assured, prompting sharp reactions from Beijing.
