An amateur fisherman in Sweden couldn’t believe his eyes when he discovered an entire medieval hoard while digging on a beach for worms to use as bait.

Digging in the sand, the man found a cauldron filled with medieval rings, lockets and several thousand coins, all of which were extremely well preserved.

Officials said the discovery was made in Stockholm County, which has 26 municipalities. The man made the spectacular discovery on a beach near his holiday home, however the location is not being named, nor are the details of the lucky fisherman.

“The man reported the discovery to the County Board and archaeologists are now investigating the site and examining the coins, beads, rings and lockets that make up the treasure,” Swedish authorities said in a statement.

Sofia Andersson, an archaeologist at Stockholm County Council, called the finds “one of the largest silver hoards from the early Middle Ages ever found in Sweden”.

“We don’t know exactly how many coins there are yet, but I think it could be as high as 20,000,” he added.
