Armenia, Azerbaijan agree to hold peace talks Wednesday to de-escalate dispute over enclave Nagorno Karabakhannounced the services of the Armenian Prime Minister Nicole Pasinian.
The press release came after Mr Pasinian held talks with Azeri President Ilam Aliyev in Brussels. The two men also agreed to set up a bilateral border demarcation committee, according to the press release.
The Armenian prime minister and the Azeri president “instructed the two countries’ foreign ministers” to begin preparations for peace talks between the two countries, “according to a press release issued in Yerevan. Also present at the meeting of the two leaders was the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
Both Russia and the United States have expressed concern about the new escalation of tensions in the enclave.
In 2020, the Azerbaijani army ousted Armenian forces from vast areas they had controlled since 1990 in and around the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, before a Russian-mediated ceasefire was agreed.
Armenia said last month that it expects Moscow to take action to get Azerbaijan to withdraw troops from Nagorno-Karabakh’s areas monitored by a Russian peacekeeping force. Azerbaijan claims that these areas are part of its territory.
According to a statement issued by Mr. Pasinyan’s office, the Armenia-Azerbaijan “bilateral border demarcation commission” will also deal with “outstanding issues” in order to guarantee “security and stability”. The text does not go into details.
