US sanctions on Russian banks hit “ordinary citizens”, says Russian ambassador

by

The sanctions imposed by the government of US President Joe Biden against two of Russia’s largest banks are a “direct blow to the Russian people”, to “ordinary citizens”, Anatoly Antonov said on Wednesday, according to the Russian ambassador to the USA. with the state news agency TASS.

It referred to the sanctions imposed on Sberbank, which accounts for about a third of savings in Russia, and on Alfabank, the fourth largest credit institution of the country, on the part of Washington, in retaliation for the Russian military invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

According to Antonov, these sanctions also affect “the world economy”.

“The incessant sanctions of the (American) government show what its true intentions are. An example is the restrictive measures in Sberbank and Alfabank, in which most Russians have their savings. “This is an attack on the Russian people, the ordinary people,” the ambassador said.

“Imposing new sanctions, Washington continues to hit the global economy “and” undermines the ability of foreign partners to have mutually beneficial relations with us. “It leaves foreign companies without the necessary income in a period of economic turmoil,” he continued.

Referring to the US effort “to make it difficult to repay our public debt”, Ambassador Antonov described them as a “riddle”. “We see these efforts as a manifestation of the desire to tarnish the image of Russia, which, despite the obstacles that Washington is building, continues to meet its debt obligations in good faith and on time.”
