The proposal for compulsory vaccination against Covid-19 in persons over 60 years of age did not gather the required majority in the German Federal Parliament.
The proposal 296 deputies voted in favorwhile 378 voted against it and nine deputies abstained.
The proposal was backed mainly by lawmakers from the ruling coalition parties (SPD, Greens, FDP), while party leaders had lifted party discipline rules, allowing lawmakers to vote conscientiously.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Left supported the rejection of compulsory vaccinationwhile the Christian Union (CDU / CSU) had testified her own proposal for the establishment of a national vaccination register before the introduction of the obligation, which also turned down.
Given the fact that Chancellor Olaf Soltzas Health Minister Carl Lauterbach had personally advocated for compulsory vaccination of all adults, the ruling coalition suffered its first major parliamentary defeat today.
