Britain, Canada and Australia have so far refused to proceed with deportations of Russian diplomatsin contrast to 15 European countries that have deported more than 200 as a result of alleged war crimes in Ukraine, reports the British Guardian.
Another 200 Russian diplomats have been deported in the past two months.
The United Kingdom is reluctant to act, despite a warning from Foreign Minister Liz Trass, who has said the “era of engagement” with Russia is over.
The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trinto, defended the decision, saying that it is possible that Russia will reciprocate with a similar measure.
He said he was not sure if the “symbolic gesture” would be worth expelling Canadian diplomats from the country.
Britain had deported 23 Russian diplomats in 2018 after the Kremlin failed to provide adequate explanations for the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal in Salisbury.
Last week, Poland, Germany, France, Slovenia, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Latvia, HellasPortugal, Estonia, Ireland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Austria and Luxembourg have declared Russian diplomats undesirable and expelled them.
