Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoγlu announced today that US counterpart Anthony Blinken had invited him in Washington for talks on May 18as the two NATO allies launched an effort this week to improve and strengthen their long-strained relationship.
Speaking to reporters in Brussels after a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, the Turkish foreign minister also said that Talks with US on Turkey’s request to buy F-16 aircraft are well under way and armament systems to modernize its fighters. He added that Ankara welcomes reports that the US government has sent a letter to Congress stating that the sale serves US interests and NATO.
Tsavousoglu also said he had told his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmitry Kuleba, that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine could be held in Turkey from now on.
As he said, there are still about 30 Turkish citizens, including their comrades, stranded in Mariupol where thousands are believed to have been killed in the last month as the city is besieged and bombed mercilessly.
Tsavousoglu also said he had agreed with his Canadian counterpart Melanie Jolie to work to overcome the Ottawa-imposed embargo on Turkey’s defense industry, mainly related to the ban on the sale of instruments for Turkish Bayraktar T2 unmanned aerial vehicles.
