The Israeli Air Force on Saturday raided positions controlled by government forces in areas of central Syria, the Syrian news agency SANA reported.
The agency did not say if there were any casualties in the raid.
The Syrian air defense responded to an “Israeli air strike” today in the central region of the country, Syrian state media reported.
“The Israeli enemy has carried out airstrikes against Syrian positions” in several locations, including Masyaf in the central province of Hama, the agency said, without elaborating on the targets.
The Syrian air defense was activated, he added.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Israeli air force targeted weapons depots and research centers to develop missiles and unmanned aircraft belonging to the Syrian government in three locations in the province of Hama.
Several explosions were heard in these areas, added the NGO, which has an extensive network of sources in the war-torn country.
According to the Observatory, Iranian militias as well as Lebanese Hezbollah are present at the three targeted points controlled by government forces.
Iran and Hezbollah, which are helping Damascus militarily, are sworn enemies of Israel, a neighbor of Syria and Lebanon.
According to SANA, the Israeli planes fired their missiles while flying over the territory of northern Lebanon, on the border with Syria.
Since the start of the war in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in its neighboring country, targeting positions of the Syrian army, Iranian forces and pro-Iranian Hezbollah.
Israel rarely comments on strikes against Syria, but says it will not allow Iran to expand its influence in Syria
The war in Syria, which erupted in the crackdown on pro-democracy protests, has claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 people, destroyed the country’s infrastructure and displaced millions.
