Plans to develop a permanent military presence on its external borders to be able to withstand any future Russian attack on NATO, alliance leader Jens Stoltenberg told The Telegraph.
NATO is “in the midst of a very fundamental transformation” that will reflect the “long-term consequences” of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions, Stoltenberg said in an interview with a British newspaper.
“What we are seeing now is a new reality, a new normalcy for European security. “As a result, we have asked our military commanders to provide us with options for what we call a restart, a long-term NATO reshuffle,” said the Norwegian leader of the military alliance.
Mr Stoltenberg, who recently announced that he would remain Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for another year, also told the Telegraph that final decisions on the changes would be taken at the NATO summit in Madrid in June.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sparked the largest refugee crisis in the Old Continent since World War II and forced Western governments to reconsider their defense policies.
