Putin-Lukashenko meeting on developments in Ukraine and Western sanctions

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko today to discuss the situation in Ukraine and the western sanctionsbroadcast news agencies in Russia and Belarus.

Russia sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24 from Russian and Belarusian territory to carry out what Moscow calls a “special military operation” to demilitarize and “de-Nazify” its neighbor.

Ukraine and Western governments have rejected the allegations, calling them a false pretext for an invasion that has killed thousands and displaced millions, and has now shifted its focus to Kiev. in eastern Ukraine, where a huge attack is expected.

Mr Lukashenko has insisted that Belarus be involved in negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, adding that Belarus has been unjustly described as an “accomplice in the attack”.

The EU, the US and others have included Belarus in the sweeping sanctions they have imposed on Russia.

Mr Lukashenko arrived in the Amur region of the Russian Far East early today to meet with Putin at the Russian Vostocny Cosmodrome, the Belarusian news agency Belta reported.

April 12 marks the Day of Cosmonautics in Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union, on the anniversary of the first manned flight in space in 1961 by Russian Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
