Only one in five Italians will travel this year for the Easter holidays. The reason is the rapid rise in prices across the market, as a result of the turmoil caused by the global war in Ukraine. After two years of restrictions against coronavirus and with tourism timidly trying to recover, high prices are a barrier for Italian families who do not seem to have the ability and desire to celebrate.
A survey by Acs Marketing Solutions on behalf of Fedalberghi shows that 89.5% of travelers will stay in Italy this Easter. This percentage does not differ much from the “zero” levels of tourism in Easter 2020 and 2021 amid a pandemic.
In the same vein, another Ipsos survey on behalf of the Federdistribuzione found that 75% of Italians were concerned about the family budget and 88% of Italians were “ready to take action to reduce spending, including a 39% cut in consumption.” %. According to the director of Federdistribuzione, Carlo Alberto Buttarelli, 40% of those who will stay at home this Easter cite financial reasons.
The spike in fuel prices, as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, discourages Italians from traveling even to nearby destinations, so they choose to go for a walk in the countryside or travel by train. An Italian needs up to 16 euros extra to fill the tank of his car, writes the newspaper La Repubblica.
Even for Easter Sunday lunch, Italians will have to spend more than last year, due to price increases on many products, such as meat. According to the Italian newspaper, the Italian’s wallet will be charged an additional 100 euros for the Easter meal.
