New York law enforcement authorities confirmed on Wednesday morning that Frank James is suspected of being the shooter in an attack carried out on Tuesday at a subway station in the city. The action left at least 23 injured, 10 of which were shot.
James had his identity released at a press conference hours after the attack, but was classified only as a “person of interest”, not a direct suspect. His possible connection to the action was established by his renting a moving van whose key was found at the station — the vehicle was a few blocks away, but empty.
New York Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday that James remained at large but believed police would soon arrest the suspect. TV networks even reported the arrest, information denied by the politician. “We are going to capture this person, bring him to justice and hold him accountable for this horrible act,” he told CNN.
Later, in another interview, he reported that initial investigations point out that James apparently acted alone and had no further attacks planned.
According to Adams, of the 23 injured in action 4 are still hospitalized – he did not give details about the condition of each one.
The mayor also sought to reinforce that the New York subway is a safe place. “I would be on the subway today if I wasn’t quarantined [por causa da Covid]”, he said. This Tuesday’s attack took place amid a scenario of increasing violence in the American city’s subway system, which was already putting pressure on local authorities for measures that promote public safety.
A report released by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA) in January shows that murders in this environment grew 33% in 2021 compared to the previous year.
